Job summary
The School of Engineering at the University of Birmingham seeks to recruit an outstanding civil engineer for the role of Programme Director and Associate Professor in Civil Engineering (Teaching focused) based at the University of Birmingham, Dubai campus. The post-holder will work closely with the Engineering Subject lead, module leads and other critical academics at the Edgbaston Campus who contribute to and deliver the Civil Engineering and Construction Management Programmes.
The school’s strengths are geotechnical and structural engineering, asset management and infrastructure engineering. Applicants should be capable of teaching a broad base of construction management modules but may have a particular focus in terms of civil engineering scholarship.

Based on the UoB Dubai campus, the post holder will act as the Civil Engineering Programme Director. They will be expected to contribute widely to the taught modules delivered as part of this programme in line with their subject knowledge, work with Edgbaston-based module leads to shape and provide the programme in line with local needs, supervise dissertation projects, and eventually, develop new Civil Engineering or complementary modules. They will be essential in developing Dubai-based teaching on Civil Engineering, Construction Management and related disciplines and keep an active and collaborative link with staff developing the teaching and research in Birmingham. As such, they will be contributing at a senior level on a sustained basis to the whole range of teaching leadership and administration. In addition, they will be expected to contribute to academic citizenship, likely to be demonstrated through generous, mutually respectful and supportive working relationships with all staff and students.
Teaching will include (a) development and leadership of effective teaching programmes or equivalent; and (b) enhancement of the student experience or employability that are of manifest benefit to the College and the University. It is expected that you will demonstrate a significant contribution to the advancement of teaching (policy, practice, standards) of the subject and provide leadership in teaching and learning that is innovative to the subject area or institution, with a significant contribution to the debate nationally about teaching.
Management and administration will include Departmental/School leadership and management activity with university-wide involvement – for example, through sustained high value impact knowledge transfer, enterprise, business engagement, public engagement or similar activities.
Scope of the role
Contribute to the whole range of teaching and administration.
Teaching is likely to include: (a) development (including programme/module review) and leadership of the civil engineering programmes in Dubai; and (b) enhancement of the student experience or employability, that is of manifest benefit to the College and the University. The role will typically also involve developing and advising others, including (a) providing expert advice to staff and students and (b) developing and advising others on learning and teaching tasks and methods.
Teaching-focused role-holders should advance the practice of teaching in their modules within the school, take a role in leading curriculum development, and play an essential role in student academic support.
They should also deliver excellent teaching that inspires students and is informed by discipline-based research.
Management and administration are likely to involve contributions at the school level, such as Teaching Committee, and making an essential contribution to some managerial/leadership (e.g. working groups) within the University. This activity may include developing and making substantial contributions to knowledge transfer, enterprise, business engagement, public engagement, widening participation, schools outreach, or similar activities at the school level or further within the University.
