Job summary
The School of Engineering at the University of Birmingham seeks to recruit outstanding Mechanical Engineers scientists for the role of an Assistant Professor in Mechanical Engineering (Teaching focused) to be based at the University of Birmingham, Dubai campus. The development and opening of our Dubai Campus in the Autumn of 2018 marked us out as the first global top 100 and Russell Group University to establish a campus in Dubai. Initially, we are offering a range of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, including Economics, Teacher Education, Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering and Business. Over the next ten years, our ambition is to grow the University of Birmingham Dubai to around 4,500 students studying a full range of programmes and establish an active research programme.
As an Assistant Professor, you will make a substantial contribution to the management, development and delivery of teaching and assessment at all levels relating to Mechanical Engineering, including Engineering Mathematics, Fluid Mechanics and Energy Transfer, Mechanics, Design, Computing for Engineering and Engineering Materials, whilst enhancing the student experience and employability. Through excellent teaching, you will inspire students, be informed by discipline-based research, and contribute to the management and administration of the Department in Dubai. Applicants should be capable of teaching a broad base of core mechanical engineering but may have a particular focus in terms of mechanical engineering scholarship.

- Typically, hold a higher Degree (usually PhD) in a relevant Subject area or a closely related discipline or equivalent qualifications and experience.
- Be able to demonstrate extensive research/teaching experience and scholarship within the subject specialism.
- Have extensive experience and be able to demonstrate success in developing appropriate approaches to learning and teaching, and advising colleagues
- Have the understanding and ability to contribute to broader management/administration processes.
You will receive a competitive package and be a crucial part of our expanding and ambitious University as we develop our international reputation and global footprint. All posts are based in Dubai. For the first few months of the appointment, you will be seconded to the University of Birmingham Edgbaston campus in the UK for induction in preparation for delivering the Birmingham teaching experience in Dubai. Whilst on secondment, the University of Birmingham will provide you with accommodation and expenses.

- Develop and manage approaches to teaching and learning that are best practice in the subject area or institution.
- Contribute to leading curriculum development and renewal.

- Advance the practice of teaching in their modules and within the school and play an essential role in student academic support.
- Inform your teaching practice with discipline-based research.
- Frequently update your subject expertise and undertake personal, professional development in teaching, including self-reflection on your teaching, using student and peer Review feedback to enhance your teaching, and learning processes.
- You may play an essential role in the recruitment and admission of students; and co-supervise doctoral students to completion.
Using a variety of methods in teaching and advising individuals and groups of undergraduates, postgraduates, or CPD students, including (as appropriate):
- Teaching and examining courses at a range of levels.
- Planning and reviewing your teaching approaches and encouraging others to do the same.
- Designing contemporary, inclusive, engaging and academically challenging curriculum content.
- Working collaboratively with colleagues to design and deliver teaching, learning and assessment.
- Using digital resources/environments effectively to support learning and assessment.
- Developing programme proposals and making substantial contributions to the design of teaching programmes more widely.
- Where appropriate, undertaking and developing the full range of responsibilities concerning supervision, marking, and examining.
- Developing and advising others on learning and teaching tasks and methods.
- Developing and making substantial contributions to knowledge transfer, enterprise, business engagement, public engagement activities or similar on own specialism that enhances the student experience or employability, and which benefits the College and University.
