Job Description:

In this role, you will be responsible for performing all managerial functions typically associated with Division level management, either directly or through delegation to assigned personnel. Your key responsibilities include providing consultative services by contributing to the development of Pharmacy Services policies, procedures, and standards. You will also play a vital role in the patient care evaluation program, particularly in terms of drug use and effectiveness.

Key Responsibilities:

• Oversee and manage all Division-level managerial functions, both directly and through delegation.
• Contribute to the development of Pharmacy Services policies, procedures, and standards.
• Ensure adherence to ethical and professional practices in all pharmacy service activities, including proper storage, preparation, and dispensation of drugs, chemicals, and biological materials.
• Administer control procedures related to the storage, handling, recording, dispensing, and distribution of pharmaceuticals.
• Obtain health authority import permits for narcotic, controlled, and psychotropic drugs.
• Submit annual forecasts for narcotic requirements based on estimated usage.
• Monitor and report on inventory and usage of narcotic, controlled, and psychotropic drugs.
• Conduct perpetual inventory counts and manage pharmacy inventory according to hospital policy.
• Lead the design and publication of the Drug Formulary, a comprehensive reference for medical personnel.
• Stay updated on newly marketed drugs, pharmaceutical catalogs, and professional reference materials.
• Act as a member of various hospital committees, including the Pharmacy & Therapeutics Committee and Drug Utilization Review Committee.
• Provide advice on treatment criteria, cost, and appropriate drug usage.
• Assess, evaluate, and follow up on pharmacy staff candidates seeking licensure.
• Make immediate decisions based on circulars/letters from the Ministry of Health.
• Ensure employees receive mandatory fire safety, infection control, and other in-house training.
• Develop written policies and procedures, maintain adequate supplies, and oversee the dispensing of pharmaceutical items.
• Establish and manage drug distribution systems.
• Ensure proper dispensing of prescriptions per SGH policies and contract agreements.
• Collaborate with the Ministry of Health to comply with rules and regulations related to drug use and control.
• Report to the Group Director of Pharmaceutical Services, Chief of Medical Operations, and Chief Operating Officer on respective issues.
• Contribute to the development of pharmacy policies, procedures, and standards, with a focus on patient care evaluation programs related to drug use and effectiveness.
• Adhere to approved ethical and professional practices throughout pharmacy service activities.
• Maintain proper storage, preparation, and dispensation of drugs and chemicals.
• Secure import permits for narcotic, controlled, and psychotropic drugs from the Ministry of Health.
• Forecast and submit annual narcotic requirements based on actual and estimated usages.
• Review pharmaceutical catalogs, brochures, and reference materials.
• Ensure dealings with agents/vendors comply with storage and sanitation standards.
• May chair the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee, prepare agendas, preside over meetings, and oversee decision implementation.
• Assess pharmacy candidates during interviews and recommend them for hire.
• Decide upon receipt of circulars/letters from the Ministry of Health regarding medication withdrawal or discontinuation and report adverse effects.
• Approve pharmaceutical item purchases in collaboration with Materials Management and Bait Al Batterjee Medical Services.
• Monitor pharmaceutical re-ordering levels, prices, and expiry dates.
• Delegate duties and responsibilities effectively within the department.
• Collaborate with other departments, primarily nursing, to resolve work-related issues.
• Attend meetings and communicate decisions to department staff.
• Perform other duties as assigned by higher management to ensure efficient service.

• Thorough knowledge of DHA policies and regulations regarding pharmaceuticals.
• Ability to build confidence and work with individuals at all levels within Medical services and collaborative departments.
• Competence in dealing with government authorities concerning Pharmacy regulatory issues.
